Monitoring-Based Commissioning
Maximize energy efficiency for the long haul with MBCx services from Iconergy.
Gain In-Depth Awareness of Equipment Operations Through MBCx.
Monitoring-Based Commissioning (MBCx) is a continuous, data-driven approach to optimizing building performance as energy costs rise. Rather than a one-time efficiency effort, MBCx continuously identifies inefficiencies and savings opportunities—helping facilities remain energy-compliant, comfortable, and cost-efficient over the long term.
What is Monitoring-Based Commissioning (MBCx)?
Monitoring-Based Commissioning (MBCx) combines continuous system monitoring, automated data analysis, and commissioning expertise to optimize building performance over time. Using sensors, meters, and integrated data sources—including HVAC, lighting, electrical systems, utility bills, and even solar or EV charging—MBCx identifies energy waste and uncovers ongoing efficiency opportunities.
Unlike traditional commissioning or retro-commissioning, which are typically one-time efforts, MBCx is an ongoing process. It builds on prior insights to ensure systems continue performing as intended while driving continuous operational and energy improvements.
Benefits of Monitoring-Based Commissioning
In addition to the below, retro-commissioning can also provide other benefits, such as increased building value, lower maintenance costs, and improved sustainability. Our diverse approach to RCx projects means you can pick and choose energy upgrades to maximize savings on a budget-friendly basis.
Improved Energy Efficiency
MBCx allows us to identify and address energy inefficiencies in real-time, resulting in improved energy efficiency and reduced energy costs.
Enhanced Comfort
Improve occupant comfort by ensuring that building systems are functioning optimally. This can be particularly important in buildings that have different occupant requirements, such as hospitals, hotels, and commercial buildings.
Lower Operating Costs
MBCx can result in lower operating costs by reducing energy consumption and optimizing equipment performance. Fixing system inefficiencies over time can significantly reduce energy costs in your building.
Longer Equipment Life
Extend the life of your building's equipment by ensuring that it is functioning optimally. By identifying and addressing problems quickly, MBCx can help prevent premature wear and tear.
Increased Building Value
Increase your building’s value by improving its energy efficiency and reducing operating costs. This is particularly important if you’re looking to sell your properties or attract tenants.
Easier Data Management
MBCx can store and display all your building and energy data – BAS trend logs, utilities, renewables, EV charging, emissions – in one easy-to-use interface. You own all the data, and can export it at anytime.
Our Approach to Monitoring-Based Commissioning
Monitoring-Based Commissioning begins with understanding your facility, goals, and operational priorities. Our team takes a highly customized, collaborative approach—designing long-term solutions tailored to your building rather than applying one-size-fits-all strategies. By focusing on the opportunities that deliver the greatest value, we ensure MBCx drives sustained performance and measurable results over time.
1 - Planning & Systems Assessment: The first step is to assess your building and its systems to determine the scope of our MBCx project. We’ll review building plans and equipment schedules, gather information on the various sources of data, and collaborate with all the relevant parties – including IT departments, controls contractors, and facilities staff. We want to ensure everyone has buy-in to the process, and that we meet all the requirements necessary to install and connect our tools.
3 - Data Analysis & Optimization Planning: The data we collect will be analyzed to identify opportunities for improvement. This may involve comparing energy usage to historical data or industry benchmarks, identifying areas of excessive energy consumption, or identifying equipment that is not performing optimally. Iconergy has developed a suite of software tools to automatically find these common energy-saving and operational issues, and will develop new custom ones for the facility, with your input.
5 - Data Visualization & Reporting: Iconergy will set up graphs, charts, and other displays in a custom dashboard. You will have access to all the raw BAS and meter data, and we’ll provide training on how to build your own custom views as well. We can set up email notifications to alert you about specific things found in the data, or provide a regular summary of issues/opportunities. If your organization has specific reporting requirements, Iconergy can set up tools to automate much of that process.
2 - Monitoring Equipment & Software Installation: We’ll remotely connect or locally install our software and begin collecting data on energy usage and system performance. We can do this by utilizing existing building automation systems (BAS), and metering equipment if available. We can also help install new metering and submetering devices for you.
4 - System Implementation: Based on our data analysis, we’ll begin strategic changes and optimizations to improve energy efficiency and reduce energy consumption. This might involve adjusting system settings, repairing or replacing faulty equipment, installing smart energy systems, and/or upgrading to more energy-efficient equipment.
6 - Fine Tuning & Monitoring: Finally, we’ll continuously monitor your building’s energy systems to ensure that they are functioning optimally. Regular data analysis and fine-tuning can help us identify further opportunities for improvement and ensure that the building is achieving optimal energy efficiency over the long term. Iconergy engineers will conduct regular review meetings with staff to go over the findings, and we’ll provide you access to view the data and analysis yourself.
