Energy Audits & Consulting
Make sense of the data behind energy use and translate it into actionable solutions and utility cost savings.
Utility costs unusually high? Energy audits & consulting are for you.
Our team conducts holistic energy audits to gain an understanding of in-depth energy use throughout the entire building. This process determines areas of energy waste as well as areas with a potential to be more energy efficient.
The data from our energy audits allow for building owners to make data-driven decisions on strategies to implement toward lowering utility costs. When it comes to making strategic decisions about energy upgrades, energy audits and consulting is the first step.
Benefits of Energy Audits & Consulting
Our clients who partner with Iconergy’s energy audit & consulting team are typically experiencing the following issues:
- Equipment that is half-way through its anticipated life-cycle or older
- Energy utility costs that don’t seem to add up
- Extreme weather conditions that results in poor occupant comfort
- A need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions
- Unsure of the anticipated results from implementing renewable energy and energy efficiency measures
- Deferred maintenance items that get pushed back year after year
Our team follows industry standards including American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) to answer all of the questions our clients have about their energy usage, generation, and waste issues in their buildings. By doing this, the buildings we implement solutions for generally see a 15-20%+ drop in energy utility costs due to the savings and return on investment from our projects.
Lowering Utility Costs for Our Clients
For all energy audit and consulting projects, our team helps our clients determine the priority of implementation. Whether it’s tuning-up existing equipment or recommending equipment replacement, our clients appreciate having a prioritized list with the projected simple payback timeline to make decisions based on data, usage, and savings. Having this plan in place, our clients know the exact equipment that is wasting the most energy and can prioritize those areas first, having a bigger impact on both lowering utility costs and lowering GHG emissions.
We'll also include deferred maintenance items in our plan to help provide a timeline and budget for when these items will finally be knocked off the ever-growing list..
Our Process to Energy Audits & Consulting
The vital first step of our process is fully understanding your building or campus. We work closely with our clients to understand their needs and objectives to provide a far more successful outcome.
Once we’ve nailed down your goals for the project, we’ll begin collecting the necessary data to paint a picture of your building’s energy use. We recognize that every space is unique, so we adjust our services accordingly.
Each energy audit evaluates key building systems—including the envelope, HVAC, domestic hot water, lighting, and plug loads—to identify inefficiencies and upgrade opportunities with strong payback potential.
We analyze utility usage, rate structures, benchmarking data, and building history to understand how facilities operate and where the greatest energy savings can be achieved.
Audit reports outline energy and water usage, emissions impacts, projected savings, and return on investment, with optional presentations and staff training to support informed decision-making.
Levels of Energy Audits
ASHRAE defines three levels of audits that builds on the previous level. As audit complexity increases, so does the thoroughness of the site assessment, the amount of data collected, and the detail provided in the final audit report.
Level 1: Site Assessment or Preliminary Audits
Overall view of the energy consumption of a building to identify no-cost and low-cost energy saving opportunities, and a general view of potential capital improvements. Activities include an assessment of energy bills and a brief site inspection of your building.
- Utility bill analysis & comparison
- Site visit to assess operations
- Identify low-cost / no-cost measures
- Identify potential capital upgrades
Level 2: Energy Survey and Analysis
In-depth analysis of energy costs, select spot utility measurements, energy usage and building characteristics, and a more refined survey of how energy is used in your building. Many clients seek ASHRAE Level 2 Energy Audits to satisfy local ordinance requirements.
- Identify O&M improvements
- Disaggregate energy use to major systems
- Evaluate practical measures (cost-effectiveness)
- Evaluate potential capital upgrades
Level 3: Detailed Analysis of Capital-Intensive Modifications/IGA
Detailed analysis of capital-intensive modification audits (sometimes referred to as an “Investment Grade Audit”, or IGA) provide detailed recommendations and financial analysis for major capital investments. Level 3 audits include monitoring and more detailed and sometimes longer-term data collection.
- Collect field measurements
- Engineering evaluation of capital upgrades
- Conduct Life-Cycle Cost Analysis (LCCA) of proposed upgrades
