Dark Sky Compliance

Make sure your upcoming exterior lighting project is DarkSky Certified.

Be Dark Sky compliant and maintain lighting requirements.

Dark Sky compliance means proper consideration of shielding, distribution, and color temperature. As a society, we can mitigate the effects that outdoor lighting has on the health of both our communities and wildlife. Artificial light has provided society with the ability to safely and effectively work and live in the outdoors at night. But has come at a price for the natural environment.

What is Dark Sky Compliance?

DarkSky is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and protecting the nighttime environment from light pollution. Founded in 1988, the International Dark-Sky Association (IDA) works towards raising awareness about the adverse effects of artificial lighting on ecosystems, wildlife, human health, and the night sky’s visibility. Their mission revolves around promoting responsible outdoor lighting practices, advocating for efficient lighting technologies, and supporting communities in achieving DarkSky Places and DarkSky Parks designations.

Dark Sky Compliance refers to adhering to the guidelines and principles set forth by the IDA to minimize light pollution and its negative impacts. For lighting projects in both new construction and retrofits, achieving Dark Sky compliance involves implementing lighting designs that are mindful of shielding, distribution, and color temperature. Outdoor lighting can be optimized to mitigate disturbances to wildlife, human health, and the night sky’s natural darkness.

Iconergy's Dark Sky Services

Not all of our clients seek DarkSky Certification, but do desire Dark Sky compliant ourdoor lighting to ensure that Dark Sky’s recommendations are followed to avoid excessive light pollution.

Lighting Retrofits: Our team regularly performs lighting retrofits to upgrade to be more efficient. Oftentimes, Dark Sky compliant projects don’t increase the budget for our clients while still providing all the benefits of typical lighting.

Commissioning:  A big part of a successful project means that the lighting and their controls systems were installed and operate properly. And that the lights turn on and off when they are supposed to in order to achieve the goal of reducing light pollution.

Additional Resources: The State of Colorado Office of Economic Development & International Trade hosts and Colorado Dark Sky Certification Mentor Program. The program includes up to 15 hours of on-demand technical assistance from DarkSky Colorado as well as on-line webinars.

More information on the mentorship program can be found here: Colorado Dark Sky Certification Mentor Program | Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade
