What is DarkSky Compliance?
DarkSky is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and protecting the nighttime environment from light pollution. Founded in 1988, the International Dark-Sky Association (IDA) works towards raising awareness about the adverse effects of artificial lighting on ecosystems, wildlife, human health, and the night sky’s visibility. Their mission revolves around promoting responsible outdoor lighting practices, advocating for efficient lighting technologies, and supporting communities in achieving DarkSky Places and DarkSky Parks designations.
DarkSky Compliance refers to adhering to the guidelines and principles set forth by the IDA to minimize light pollution and its negative impacts. For lighting projects in both new construction and retrofits, achieving DarkSky compliance involves implementing lighting designs that are mindful of shielding, distribution, and color temperature. By adopting these practices, outdoor lighting can be optimized to mitigate disturbances to wildlife, human health, and the night sky’s natural darkness.
