Benchmarking & Ordinance Compliance
Benchmarking measures your energy use intensity (EUI) over time, giving you all the information you need to meet compliance by 2030.
Our engineers regularly exceeds estimated savings
Our team of engineers are capable of reducing energy use in buildings by more than 20% on average.
Don’t get penalized, partner with us instead. We are ready to help a client with any building type to meet compliance from various local and state-wide regulations. Some of our tried-and-true methods are described on this page.
Where to Start
The State of Colorado has a 90% greenhouse gas reduction goal by 2050 (compared to 2005 levels). Many cities throughout the state have implemented requirements for building owners to benchmark, track, and lower their building’s energy use index (EUI). Our firm understands what it takes to work side by side with our clients to achieve this goal.
The Iconergy team is here to help. We’re passionate about supporting local business owners as they prepare for a new standard of energy use. Iconergy is a valuable resource to help you stay informed about the latest developments and updates on the Building Performance Colorado program and your local ordinance. We are here to help you stay up-to-date and engaged to achieve compliance.
Establish a Baseline
Start by establishing a baseline through the ENERGYSTAR Portfolio Manager to understand your building's current EUI.
ASHRAE Level II Energy Audit
Conduct an energy audit to identify energy conservation measures and create a roadmap for EUI reduction.
Implementation
Implement the identified projects and have Iconergy reassess your EUI to compare it to compliance targets.
Monitor and Adjust
Continuously monitor and verify the building's EUI and sustain or improve the building's EUI.

- Regulatory Compliance: Ensure your building meets all necessary requirements and standards.
In-House Services that Lower EUI
Our team of engineers and technical experts are well-known for their ability to provide solutions that achieve performance estimates. Once benchmarking is completed and the EUI becomes known, our team partners with our clients to lower their EUI to be in compliance with Energize Denver. A few examples of our in-house services include:
Energy Auditing
An in-depth ASHRAE Level II Energy Assessment that allows building owners to make data-driven decisions that take into account the cost of the project, annual utility savings, and estimated return on investment.
Retro-Commissioning
Our team will analyze your building and make suggestions where existing equipment can be upgraded as well as low- to no-cost energy efficiency measures.
Design-Build
We can improve your EUI by replacing equipment that has exceeded its determined useful life with energy efficient models or extend the life of existing equipment.
Energy Performance Contracting
Our team will perform an Investment Grade Audit (IGA) to determine a list of capital improvement measures that achieve energy and utility savings. Those savings, in turn, pay for the overall cost of the project over a specified period of time.
Solar & Geothermal
Invest in renewable energy for your facility. Once energy conservation measures have been implemented, renewable energy is an optimal strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Our team regularly does feasibility studies and implementation for clients.
Controls & Building Automation Systems
Optimize controls sequences to make your building as efficient as possible by reducing runtime of equipment. Our solutions are open protocol-based, meaning you can choose your equipment and vendors and not be tied to one controls product line.

Local and State-Wide Ordinances
We recommend putting plans in place to achieve compliance several months before the deadline as it can take several months to complete our analysis, implement equipment upgrades or replacements, and for your EUI to show a reducing trend over time. Each of these programs require energy data to be entered in the ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager tool, which makes for a seamless effort when reporting for local and statewide requirements.
Next Steps for Meeting EUI Compliance
Iconergy’s team are experts at completing a holistic, full-building analysis to determine areas where energy can be reduced either by eliminating energy waste or increasing energy efficiency. We take pride in recommending projects where the real-time savings are close to or exceed our projections. While many of our clients begin their conversations with us having a goal in mind to avoid fines and penalties, our clients are pleased with the outcome of their building being more efficient, easier to operate, and occupants are more comfortable.
Building Performance Colorado - Statewide
Commercial, multifamily, and public buildings that are more than 50,000 square-feet must comply with the requirements of benchmarking their EUI and taking action to reduce their EUI in order to avoid fines and penalties.
More about the regulation can be found on the Colorado Energy Office website.
Boulder Building Performance Ordinance
Every 10 years, buildings that are over 50,000 square-feet within the City of Boulder limits are required to benchmark their EUI and meet compliance.
More about the regulation can be found on the Boulder Performance Ordinance Program website.
Energize Denver
Energize Denver has two different for criteria based on the building being above or below 25,000 square feet. Many aspects of the building performance policy have been updated.
More about the regulation can be found on the Energize Denver website.
Fort Collins Building Scoring and Water Program
Buildings of 5,000 square-feet or more are subject to Fort Collins’ Building Scoring and Water Program.
More about the regulation can be found on the Fort Collins Building Energy and Water Scoring website.
As these policies are updated, you’ll need to be aware of how your building’s square footage factors into energy compliance.
